    05. Insurance Approves Your Claim

    06. Choose Your Roof Materials

    09. Inspect New Roof

1. SCHEDULE A ROOF

INSPECTION

If you suspect that your roof may have storm damage, our first step is to perform a free roof inspection so we can assess the damage.

Inspection FAQ:

Do you need to be home during the inspection?

• No! We love to have homeowners there so we can talk about what we find and your options, but we can also conduct the inspection while you’re at work and get in touch after.

2. PREPARE

INSPECTION

REPORT

While we’re on your roof, we’ll take photos to document the condition of each area we inspect. If there’s any damage, you won’t just have to take our word for it. We’ll create a report of our findings for you that will include all of the photos we take. Your insurance company can also see the report as part of your claim.

Inspection FAQ:

How long does it take to get your report?

• We can usually deliver the report within 24 hours of your inspection.

How will your Project Manager communicate with you?

• Phone, text, or email.

3. FILE THE

INSURANCE

CLAIM

If we find damage on your roof that requires more than a simple repair, we’ll recommend that you file a claim with your insurance provider.

Getting your claim approved can sometimes be tricky. Many homeowners begin the process by calling their insurance agent, but their primary role is to sell policies, not manage claims. You actually need to reach out to the claims department of your insurance provider.

Inspection FAQ:

Will you have to file the insurance claim yourself?

• No! Our Project Managers can assist you with filing your claim. In fact, we recommend having them with you when you call your claims department. After inspecting your roof, your Project Manager can fill in some blanks for your insurer, like the extent of damage, roof materials, and more.

4. MEET THE

ADJUSTER

Our Project Manager will be at your home when the Insurance Adjuster comes to inspect it. We take this extra step because we can make sure they take note of all of the damage we found. We can also discuss the replacement cost value of the project to be sure that your claim is approved for the full amount of repairs that you need.

After this, a Claim Handler usually takes over. Sometimes they request photos if the adjuster missed something during his or her assessment. Since we take photos during the inspection, we can quickly provide them to the Handler to keep your claim moving along.

Adjuster FAQ:

Do I really need my Project Manager during the adjuster meeting?

• We really do recommend having your Project Manager on-site because we’re familiar with the damage and act as a strong advocate for you so you get the claim approved for the work you really need.

5. INSURANCE

APPROVES

YOUR CLAIM

After filing your claim and meeting with your adjuster, you should get a notification from your insurance provider confirming whether your claim was approved.

Insurance FAQ:

How long does it take to get a claim approved?

• The process varies from claim to claim. In most cases, it can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months depending on how much damage there is and your insurance company’s response time.

Who does my insurance company make the check out to?

• The check will be made out to you, and you’ll use it to pay your contractor(s) for the work they’ve done.

6. CHOOSE

YOUR ROOF

MATERIALS

Once your insurance company approves your claim, it’s time to select your new roofing materials. For many homeowners, this is the fun part of the process, but keep in mind that there’s more to a roof than just shingles. We have high-quality roofing systems from Owens Corning that we usually recommend, but we’re also happy to install any roofing system that you prefer.

Materials FAQ:

Is it worth upgrading to impact-resistant shingles?

• For many Oklahoma homeowners, we think so. Class 4 shingles may:

  • Eliminate the need for, or reduce the frequency of, roof repairs

  • Extend the lifespan of your roof

  • Save money on your homeowner’s insurance

  • Prevent your insurance and deductible from increasing at renewal time

Talk to your Project Manager if you’re interested in learning more about impact-resistant shingles.

7. SCHEDULE AN

INSTALLATION

DATE

After you’ve selected your materials, it’s time to get your installation scheduled. We’ll get you on our calendar as quickly as possible for your new roof.

Scheduling FAQ:

How long do you have to wait for your install date?

• The exact wait depends on how big the storm was and if there’s any delay in getting your materials, but it won’t be long! Your Project Manager will reach out if there’s a delay that requires a reschedule.

8. ROOF

INSTALL/

REPAIR DAYS

While we’re at your home, we’ll treat it as if it were our own. That means we won’t trample your flower beds or destroy your grass. We’ll tidy up after ourselves as we work and do a very thorough clean-up at the end of the day. We have a large magnet that we use to collect any rogue nails so it’s safe for you and your family to be outside after we’re done.

Install Day FAQ:

How long does the installation take?

• For many homes, we’re able to complete a full roof replacement in just one day.

Do you have to be at home during the installation?

• No! You can live your life as you normally do, whether that’s going to work or running errands.

9. NEW ROOF

INSPECTION

Our last step is to do a post-installation inspection to be sure that our work on your new roof meets our high standards. At this time, we’ll walk you around the house to show you what we did and let you check the quality of our work yourself. If you have any questions or concerns, we’ll make sure to address them.

WHAT MAKES UP A ROOF?

Did you know that there’s more to your roof than shingles? There’s actually an entire system of materials protecting your home from the heat, hail, and ice.

Roofing System FAQ:

Does ventilation really matter?

• Yes! Ventilation is important to the health of your roof, especially in Oklahoma. During the summer, good ventilation releases heat buildup to keep your house temperature lower and reduce the burden on your air conditioner. In the winter, it helps prevent freezing on the eaves that can create ice dams. Having proper ventilation can also extend the life of your new roof.

  • The bottom layer of your roofing system is the ice and water barrier. It goes directly on top of the wooden roof deck to seal it against water.

  • The synthetic felt underlayment is a secondary water-repelling layer that works with the water barrier and shingles to prevent moisture absorption.

  • There are several types of shingles. Some cover the sloped sides of the roof, others cover the eaves, and the hip and ridge shingles protect the peak(s).

  • Intake and exhaust vents help control the temperature of your roofing system to prevent water issues and extend the life of your roof.

ACV VS. RCV INSURANCE POLICIES

There are two main types of insurance policies: ACV (actual cost value) and RCV (replacement cost value).

ACV POLICY

• ACV policies cover the cost of what your roof is worth today. That amount may not be the same as the cost of a new roof.

• If your roof is 10+ years old, most of its useful life will be over, meaning that its “actual value” is low and your insurance will not pay very much to help cover the replacement.

• If your roof is only a year or two old, an ACV policy will cover almost all of the replacement cost.

• The monthly insurance premiums are lower for an ACV policy than an RCV policy.

RCV POLICY

• RCV policies cover the full cost to replace your roof.

• This type of policy DOES NOT factor depreciation into your claim payment.

• This policy covers the cost of replacing your roof with one of similar quality. If your old roof was low quality, it will only pay for the cost of a similar roof. If you decide to upgrade to a higher-quality system, you’ll have to pay the additional cost yourself. BUT, if you have to file another claim in the future, it will pay for the higher quality roofing system next time.

• The monthly premiums are usually a bit higher for RCV policies than ACV policies.

DO YOU HAVE TO PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes, you do have to pay your deductible.

Some roofers offer to pay your deductible for you, but keep in mind that no one works for free. If they’re offering to pay your deductible, that means they’ll recover that cost somewhere in the course of the work they do for you.

They may cut corners by using poor materials or doing the repair too quickly, which means you’re likely to need more roof work soon. In most cases, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

WILL YOUR INSURANCE RATE GO UP IF YOU FILE?

Your insurance company can’t penalize you by raising your rates if you file a claim.

However, when a storm hits an area and many homeowners file claims to have their damage covered, the insurance company will raise rates on all homeowners in the area, whether they filed a claim or not! They’re a business and need to make a profit, so your rate will go up after a big storm and will go down after a season or two of no storms.

We highly recommend filing a claim right after a storm if you need a repair because the damage is usually smaller and easier to deal with the sooner you take care of it. Plus, you’re likely to see a small rate increase whether you file a claim or not, so you may as well move forward with getting the damage taken care of.

PICKING YOUR NEW ROOF MATERIALS

Generally, roofing systems come in three tiers: good, better, and best.

The benefits of investing in a higher quality roof are:

• Being able to withstand Oklahoma weather better

• Next time you get your roof replaced, your insurance will cover the cost of the better, upgraded roof

• Some insurance companies offer a premium reduction for homes with top-quality roofing systems

Roofing Material FAQ:

Can you use any roofing brand you prefer?

• Yes! We recommend Owens Corning roofing systems because they’re great quality, but we can install any system you prefer.

Are there any add-ons for my roof?

• We offer extended warranties for our roofs. Talk to your Project Manager for more information.

YOUR NEW ROOF PRICING

For customers with RCV policies, their only financial responsibility is the deductible. Customers with ACV policies will also pay their deductible and any remaining balance after accounting for depreciation.

We recommend choosing an Owens Corning roofing system because they’re high-quality and come with a great warranty. The roofing systems come in three tiers: good, better, and best.

Pricing FAQ:

  • The final cost depends on the size of your roof and the materials you choose. Your Project Manager can help you estimate the cost.

  • A few things that may change the price of your roof after we get started are price list changes from your insurance company or unforeseen damage to the materials.

  • Until the end of the month.

  • You’ll make your first payment after the roof is completed and your final after all items are finished.

You can pay by cash or check.

  • Insurance doesn’t always pay for everything at the beginning of a project. They make final payment once they see proof that the work was completed. Once we finish your roof, we document everything we did with photographs and submit them to your insurance for final payment.

YOUR NEW ROOF WARRANTY

If you choose an Owens Corning roofing system, it comes with a great warranty. Refer to the tables below to learn about the coverage that applies to your roof.

OWENS CORNING WARRANTY 101: CHEAT SHEET

Get peace of mind with the Preferred Protection System Limited Warranty. This warranty covers material defects and the labor to replace the roof for up to 50 years.

USE & CARE TIPS

Though we can’t prevent future storms that can damage your new roof, there actually are a few things you can do to help extend its life and avoid unnecessary wear and tear.

1. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH VENTILATION

Having enough ventilation can minimize the impact of hot, sunny summers and cold, windy winters to make your shingles last longer. If your roof doesn’t have enough ventilation, we recommend that you have more installed. Though you may have to pay for the upgrade out of pocket initially, your insurance policy will replace the full, upgraded system if you have to file a claim for damage in the future.

2. HANG CHRISTMAS LIGHTS WITH CARE

It may be tempting to nail your Christmas lights to the roof so they stay up all season, but you should never do anything that pierces your shingles. Every nail hole is a path for water to enter your roofing system and could cause rot and mold.

We recommend using clips or other non-invasive methods of attaching your decor.

3. CHECK RUBBER SEALS AROUND PIPES

All pipes coming out of your roof will have a rubber seal around them to prevent water from seeping in through the gap between it and the roof. Over time, this seal can crack and let water into your roofing system.

We recommend that homeowners regularly check the rubber seals and get in touch with our team right away if they seem damaged.

Can’t or don’t want to inspect the rubber seals yourself? Just give us a call and we’ll check them out!

4. AVOID THINGS THAT VOID YOUR WARRANTY

One common way that homeowners accidentally void their roof warranty is not using enough care when they (or a repair person) are on the roof. Scraping feet, tools, or other materials along the shingle granules will knock them off and reduce their ability to protect your shingles from UV damage, aging the roof prematurely.

IS YOUR NEW ROOF DAMAGED AGAIN?

We live in Oklahoma, which means that you never know when your new roof will get hit by another storm.

If you feel comfortable, get on top of your roof and use a mat to protect the area under your feet. Look for:

• Missing nails

• Missing UV coating granules on the shingles

• Missing, damaged, or warped shingles

• Missing or damage flashing

• Holes

• Bubbling or raised areas

• Discoloring or damage to the soffits

Here are some signs that it may be time to call us again for a roof inspection:

• Leaks, holes, wet rafters in the attic

• Water spots on your interior ceiling

• Mold on your exterior where the roof and wall of home meet

• Sagging or low spots you can see from the ground

If you notice any issues, reach out to your Project Manager and we’ll take a look.
